The Event Horizon Telescope collaboration recently obtained the first image of a black hole. Dr. Geoffrey Bower will describe the science and technology behind this discovery, including what it tells us about Einstein's theory of general relativity. The black hole has been given the Hawaiian name Pōwehi in recognition of the pioneering role of Maunakea telescopes - the Submillimeter Array and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope - in the experiment.

Dr. Bower is an astronomer who specializes in black holes and radio telescopes. He has worked at universities and observatories in California, New Mexico, and Germany before coming to Hawaii. Currently, he is Project Scientist for the Event Horizon Telescope, Chief Scientist for Hawaiʻi Operations with the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, based in Hilo, HI, and Affiliate Graduate Faculty with UH Mānoa Physics and Astronomy.
