Fall Concert Series

The Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP), a program of UH Mānoa Outreach College, opens its SCEP Live Online fall concert series on Friday, October 2. Over four consecutive Fridays, live musical performances by local artists will be streamed for audiences to enjoy in the comfort and safety of their own homes. The free hour-long performances will start at 7:00pm.  Please register at

The fall concert series is a joint effort between
UH Mānoa Outreach College, UH Mānoa Music Department, the East-West Center Arts Program, and Friends of Mānoa Library.

TONIGHT

TAIKO
Kenny Endo and Taiko Center of the Pacific with special guests Todd Yukumoto, SheenRu Yong, and Jeff Peterson.


Tonight’s concert honors the careers of Professor Barbara Smith and Professor William Malm and celebrates 45 years of taiko by Kenny Endo.
 
Barbara Smith is considered one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology and has been a mentor and instructor for many top scholars in the field.  In 2020, Barbara celebrated her 100th birthday and many symposiums, meetings, and concerts honoring her accomplishments have taken place.

William Malm is considered one of the foremost American authorities on Japanese music. For the first time in Hawaiʻi, the artists will perform with a set of instruments and a 
shishigashira (lion head used in the traditional Japanese lion dance) donated by Dr. Malm to the Taiko Center of the Pacific.

The International Storyteller Series continues on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 10:30am, October 26, 27, and 28. A special hour-long Halloween performance will be presented on Saturday, October 31 at 7:00pm.

Storyteller: James McCarthy

The Wyld Wonderful Wyld
James McCarthy is a multi-talented actor, musician, educator, and storyteller. His credits include a principal movie role alongside Keifer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle, seven recordings, performances ranging from classical drama to original comedy, and stage appearances with Grammy award-winning artists. He has performed for thousands of school-age children and their families. McCarthy has worked with every major cultural institution on O‘ahu to create performances that educate, inspire, and entertain.

Storyteller: Margaret Read MacDonald

Frogs, Devils, and One-Eyed Fish
Born and raised in Southern Indiana, Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald is the author of over 66 books drawing on her experience as a children’s librarian and traveling storyteller, as well as her PhD research in folklore studies. Her books include
 Peace Tales, Teaching with Story, and Pickin’ Peas. MRM has performed and taught workshops in schools and festivals around the world, including Japan, Borneo, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, Kenya, Egypt, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Luxembourg, Australia, and New Zealand.

Storyteller: Karin Amano

Japanese Folktales
Born and raised in Japan, Karin Amano trained in Japanese traditional dance, singing, and acting since an early age. She studied educational theater at New York University, and was a full-time storyteller/comedic actor at Walt Disney World for 11 years. She continues to perform annually at Epcot’s Japan Pavilion, has performed at the National Storytelling Festival in Tennessee, and played seven characters in a two-person play, 
Driving Miss Cherry Blossom, at the Orlando Fringe Festival.
