Plumeria Suncatcher

Help us decorate the library by making a plumeria suncatcher to hang on our window!
This activity will take place directly after Storytime. If you would like to come for just the craft, we will begin the plumeria craft at 11:00AM.
This event is open to all ages, especially keiki who participated in Storytime. Artistic tweens, teens, and adults also welcome.

From Barbarian Gate-Crasher to Aristocratic Emblem – A Lecture and Recital by Dr. Sun-Hui Hung

Dr. Sun-Hui Hung will be playing and discussing the historical context of the erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, sometimes known in the Western world as the Chinese violin or Chinese two-stringed fiddle, and its role in Chinese classical music composition, poetry and philosophy.
An Excellence Prize Winner of the National Erhu Competition in Taiwan, Dr. Hung has performed throughout Europe and the Americas in many prestigious music venues and in Taiwan’s National Concert Hall and Taiwan National Opera.  She has performed as a solo artist in collaboration with many major orchestras, including the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and the National Chinese Opera Company. Formerly she taught composition, musicology, and music theory at the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati.  Dr. Hung currently resides in the state of Hawaii and has developed a unique style combining the Chinese elements of the erhu with traditional Hawaiian music winning her a recent Na Hoku Hanohano Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
This program is produced by the UH Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
The Friends of the Library of Hawaii (FLH) is generously providing funding to host this program during the 2023 Summer Reading Challenge.  This program is suitable for all ages.

I Am Your Father’s Day DIY Sticker Craft

Create iconic stickers for your fathers, uncles, grandpas, or yourself! All stickers will be inspired by a galaxy far, far away.
Instruction and supplies will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to arrive on time.
Suggested age range is for Grade 3 – Teen!

Music and Movement

Did you know that music is an integral part of childhood literacy? It’s true! Join us for a morning of music, dancing, and play! We will be using a variety of keiki-friendly instruments to build motor skills, music awareness, literacy skills—all while having a ton of fun!
This program will last 30 minutes, so make sure to arrive on time!
Caregivers and keiki are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes. We will be very active!
All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band plays children’s music with aloha. The bands’ mission is to create positive music that kids can enjoy. The band’s members are seasoned performers who have entertained families across Hawaii!

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
