Honolulu, HI – “Living Truths,” a screening of the movie Farewell to Manzanar about WWII Japanese American incarceration camps will be held on Sunday, October 19 at 5 p.m. at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaiʻi Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway in Honolulu. This collaborative project is intended to draw comparisons to the current U.S. crisis of immigrant detainment and disappearance.
Farewell to Manzanar is a 1976 made-for-television film based on the book of the same name by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. The movie tells the story of Jeanne Wakatsuki’s experience as a Japanese American child imprisoned with her family at Manzanar during World War II, exploring themes of resilience, identity, and family. It parallels today’s experience of immigrants who have been removed suddenly and forcefully from their homes, separated from their families, and incarcerated at distant and sometimes undisclosed locations.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Logan Narikawa, president of JACL Honolulu and including Josh Houston, son of the filmmaker; Tina Sablan, immigration advocate from The Legal Clinic; Carole Hayashino, President Emerita Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi; and Ken Inouye from 442nd Legacy Center.
The doors to the Hawaiʻi Betsuin Social Hall will open at 4:30 p.m. with refreshments provided. The event is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Access to parking is at 1742 Lusitana Street behind the temple. Parking is free and available in lots both behind and in front of the temple.
The event is sponsored by Wesley United Methodist Church and Honpa Hongwanji - Mission of Hawaiʻi’s Committee on Social Concerns, Honpa Hongwanji Hawai’i Betsuin, and supported by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i, Allies in Resistance, JACL Honolulu, Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce and University of Hawai’i Retirees.
