The Shamisen Experience II - Beyond the Strings

Guest Artists from Tokyo, Japan: Kineya Asakichi, shamisen, and Kineya Saki III, vocals

Guest Artists from Hawaiʻi: Kenny Endo-Mochizuki Taijirō, Japanese traditional percussion; Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, shakuhachi, and Darin Miyashiro, koto

The concert celebrates the rich tradition and evolving artistry of nagauta through classical works, contemporary compositions, and Nihon Buyō dance. Distinguished guest artists from Tokyo and Hawaiʻi will perform alongside the instructors and students of Hawai'i Samon-kai, highlighting both artistic mastery and the next generation of practitioners.
This production serves as a cultural bridge between Hawaiʻi and Japan. Hawaiʻi Nagauta Samon-kai is committed to preserving and promoting traditional Japanese music and culture through education and performance opportunities for the people of Hawaiʻi.

Formed in 2010, the ensemble champions both beloved timeless masterworks and bold new works from today’s most sought-after composers, including the Pulitzer-prize winning Jennifer Higdon. The Trio captivates audiences through artistry, precision, and a shared passion for expanding the piano trio repertoire.
