Piano Student, Reia Gray Attends Gijón International Festival in Spain

MM Performance Piano student, Reia Gray attended the prestigious Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain for two weeks this August. Founded by renowned pianist and teacher Julian Martin and conductor Oliver Díaz, the festival brings together student and professional musicians from around the world. She was offered one-on-one lessons with five different high-profile pianists and performances in Gijón.

Gray shared that she joined the festival hoping for a chance “to musically recharge while surrounded by many talented and passionate pianists.” Throughout the two-week festival, she attended private lessons, masterclasses, and technique workshops, gaining inspiration from the other pianists she met.

“My most memorable experience was making lasting bonds with my roommates and getting to go to the old music institute every day for lessons,” Gray recalled. “My biggest takeaway from all of this is to not put limits on your goals, because you never know what you're capable of until you put yourself out there,” Gray reflected.

Musicians Derek Fujio, Brandon Ing and Jesse Shiroma soon joined the ensemble, and the Imaginary Homelands Band was formed. Collaborating with Shiroma and eight dancers, their collaborations were presented at Palikū Theatre on February 2022, Leeward Theatre in April 2024, and UH Hilo Performing Arts Center in October 2024. Without the dancers this time, the musicians return to the stage to present selections from recent shows and some new solos.
