-Graffiti -- Something Can Be Done About It

I live in Kaimuki and I love it! It saddens me to see that not everyone seems to love the area as much as I do, because almost every day when I drive down the hill, I see that once again someone has attacked the buildings with their spray cans. I want to help with this graffiti problem and I have over 25 years of experience assisting investors and property managers renewing their homes and buildings.

The situation:
Buildings get hit with graffiti and this is very upsetting for the owners as they cannot afford to have the whole side of a building or home repainted constantly. The result is that the graffiti stays, and according to the police, this actually results in more graffiti on that wall.

The trick:
There is a fast and cheap solution to cover up the graffiti: Have the exact color of the wall on hand for a quick paint-over, just make sure it's a perfect match, otherwise you'll have off-color square patches covering your wall.

Solutions/tips:
Always get some extra paint from your painter and/or the paint code so you can get a perfect match. If you don't have any of the above, a good paint store should be able to match your paint if you bring in a sample.

Use an anti-graffiti paint which is an epoxy used on oil tanks, factory floors etc. which costs about $90 a gallon. When a wall gets hit with graffiti, all you have to do is wipe it off with a paint stripper and a rag. This will not harm the paint, however, this solution is not used much due to the high cost of the paint.
Usually, the paint on a wall is water-based and the aerosol spray paint is oil-based. In order to effectively cover up the graffiti, you'll first have to apply primer before you can paint over it. A faster solution to covering up small areas of graffiti is to have a can of spray primer on hand - if they can spray quickly, so can you!

Repaint your entire wall with an exterior oil primer, it's cheap and it will cover all stains. It has a shine like a finish paint and it will look new and fresh. Make sure you have some extra paint should the wall get covered with graffiti again. For reoccurring graffiti problems, simply keep your roller in a bucket of water so you don't have to buy a new one each time, and simply roll over it.

There are tinted primers on the market now which you can use with a refillable paint sprayer (small, refillable aerosol can) in order to quickly cover up graffiti- just make sure you get an exact color match. Also, you can get another paint sprayer with your finish if you want.

If you don't want to do the work yourself, I can match most paints on site and quickly paint the affected areas of the wall in order to make it more affordable. I advice against trying to match the paint yourself or asking a painter to help as very few are competent at this.Let's put an end to graffiti covered walls in Kaimuki once and for all! Good luck!
