Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) - Home Energy Challenge Kicks Off in August
Home Energy Challenge
The Home Energy Challenge Returns for Its 8th Year!
Hawaiian Electric Company and the Hawaii State Department of Education are in our 8th year of the Home Energy Challenge; a contest which motivates energy conservation practices in the students' homes.
Prizes include $10,000, $6,000 and $3,000 to the schools whose families reduce the most energy use between October and March. The comparison is on a percentage scale so every school, big or small is on a level playing field. Students learn about science and conserving energy while helping the environment and their families.
Great things are in store for 2014-2015
The $10,000 grand prize is just the tip of the ice berg! The Home Energy Challenge Provides public school participants with educational material, booklets, exciting videos, presentations, and drawing contests with Mad Science presentations as classroom rewards. Schools may choose to document their energy conservation efforts in an Energy Conservation Project where 4 schools will win $1,000 each. Every year, the school winning the $10,000 grand prize is also treated to an entertaining theater performance for the whole school. Great performances by Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Ohia Productions, Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Performing Arts Center and Cirque Hawaii have graced the school stages.
Honolulu Theatre for Youth performed "Grinds" for Palisades Elementary
All homes participating in the Home Energy Challenge who reduce their energy use during the Challenge period of October 2014 to March 2015 are automatically included in the drawing to win a free KumuKit PV Solar Water Heating System, courtesy of Hawaii Energy Connection. Click to review the rules.
