Honolulu -- Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced the winners of the City and County of Honolulu's 33rd Annual Holiday Wreath Contest at a ceremony held at Honolulu Hale.

The wreath contest is an annual showcase of public talent during the holiday season. The theme for this year's contest is "Kalikimaka Kritters."

Seventy-three wreaths were entered by crafters from all over the island. The submitted entries will be on display in the Lane Gallery at Honolulu Hale for the duration of the Honolulu City Lights celebration, which opens Saturday, December 1 and runs through Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

The Mayor's Holly Award for best-in-show wreath was awarded to Marshall K. Fergerstrom of Honolulu for his wreath titled "Yukie (Eternal Happiness)," which was made from the parts of a piano, including dampers, hammers and black and white keys, and topped with a bow made with music note ribbons.

"Though the piano is no more, the wreath is a reminder of the music that once came from it and the joy of the Christmas season," said Fergerstrom. "Mele Kalikimaka!"

Three commissioners from the Commission on Culture and the Arts served as judges: Ann Asakura, Leighton Liu and Tim Slaughter. Judging was based on craftsmanship, creativity and use of materials. Twenty-six wreaths were entered in the Adult Category, 15 in the Youth Category, and 32 in the Theme Category.
