Mahalo Patricia Hamamoto

Patricia Hamamoto speaking to a KHON-2 TV news reporter at the dedication ceremony of the Patsy T. Mink bronze sculpture by artist Holly Young at the Hawaii State Public Library last December.
Mahalo to Patricia Hamamoto, the outgoing SFCA Board of Commissioners Chair. Ms. Hamamoto’s background in education, including over 30 years in the Department of Education as a teacher, vice principal, principal, and Superintendent, was invaluable in assisting the SFCA in the expansion of the Artists in the Schools program, and in building strong relationships with the state Legislature. A few highlights from the past four years include an increased funding base from annual state Legislature appropriations, increased attendance at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, and streamlining the Biennium Grants program application process.
Welcome Lloyd Unebasami

The SFCA welcomes Governor Ige’s most recent appointment, incoming SFCA Board of Commissioners Chair Lloyd Unebasami. Mr. Unebasami’s experience in Hawai‘i government administration and finance make him a tremendous asset to the foundation.  Specifically serving as Director of Finance for the Research Corporation for the University of Hawaii (RCUH), Interim President and CEO, and Chief Administrative Officer for the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Administrator for the State Procurement Office, DAGS Deputy Comptroller, Deputy Director for the Department of Taxation and Administrative Services Officer of the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority.  In addition to his work in government administration, Lloyd Unebasami has had a successful career in the private financial sector in Hawai‘i. Regarding culture and arts, Mr. Unebasami enjoyed music all throughout his educational years.  He participated in many of Hawaii’s most distinguished school bands and music programs including the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the University of Hawai‘i Band.

SFCA Board Commissioners are volunteers appointed by the Governor.

King Kamehameha Day Celebration in Kohala

SFCA staff members Jonathan Johnson (Executive Director), Denise Miyahana (Arts Program Specialist, Culture Programs) and Karen Ewald (Art in Public Places Program Director) attended the King Kamehameha I Day celebration in Kohala (Hawaiʻi Island) in June. SFCA support for conservation work on the King Kamehameha I statue in Kohala included funding for community engagement. As part of the community engagement, the Hula Preservation Society (HPS) enrolled three Kohala based kumu hula in two hula kiʻi workshop intensives at the Ka ʻAha Hula ʻO Hālauaola (KAHOH) conference in Hilo last year. Those kumu hula's halaus performed at the celebrations. Hula kiʻi is a variation of hula incorporating the use of purposefully made puppets. Almost lost after early missionaries banned the hula, this form of the dance is not widely practiced in the current era and only a few of the ancient kiʻi figures are known to still exist.

Artistic Teaching Partner Fellowships

Artistic Teaching Partner Marcia Pasqua with students from Kamilo ʻIki Elementary School during an Art Bento visit to the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum.
With a special one-time-only opportunity provided by a legislative appropriation for fiscal year 2019, the SFCA has designed a year-long Artistic Teaching Partnerships Fellowship. This program is to reward excellence in teaching artistry, as teaching artists are critical to the state's cultural well-being. Teaching artists in Hawaiʻi are productive in their own studios as well as in educational settings, where they foster the creativity of young people and help realize a number benefits both within and beyond the classroom.

The new fellowship will award unrestricted grants of $2,490 or $10,795 to artists on SFCA's Fiscal Year 2019 Artistic Teaching Partners roster who have applied for at least one
Artists in the Schools grant and/or have conducted residencies at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum through the Art Bento Program for the last five consecutive years.

Schoolwork Comes Alive with the Help of Artists in the Schools

What if art instruction, which in many public schools has gone the way of the dinosaur, was brought back into the classroom – with the express purpose of bolstering core curriculum areas like math and science? Artists in the Schools, a Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts program, is doing just that. For over a decade, the program has increased Hawaii teachers’ capacity to teach core subjects and meet DOE-mandated standards, all while giving Hawaii students greater access to an arts education.

CHANGE Report on Arts and Culture and the Revival of the Hawaiian Language

“It’s not so much that we place the art – because we did that for many years – but now how do people respond to that, how do they engage in that, how does that become part of their life,” says Jonathan Johnson, executive director of the foundation. Now, he adds, the focus is: “What do the arts do for me?”
