Backstage at the Cantonese Opera

October 20, 2019 | 2:00pm | UH Mānoa Campus Center Ballroom

Hong Kong-based Spring Glory Cantonese Opera Workshop brings their marquee production Backstage to Honolulu for a single performance. Take a glimpse at life behind the curtain as the Cantonese Opera troupe prepares for their performance.

In Act I, a young reporter explores backstage at a Cantonese Opera performance as the performers get ready for their upcoming performance. She encounters a truly amazing environment, with dazzling costumes, unique makeup, stylized movements and beautiful vocal technique. In Act II, the audience is treated to an excerpt from the Cantonese Opera, "Scramble for the Umbrella."

The cast of Backstage is led by master Cantonese Opera artist Yuen Siu-Fai. The production is a delight for all ages and will be enjoyed by those familiar with as well–as those new to–Cantonese Opera.

This performance is co-presented by the East-West Center Arts Program and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Outreach College with support from the Universityʻs Center for Chinese Studies, Wo Luk Music Club and the following sponsors:
