City extends expiration date on driver licenses

HONOLULU -- The city's Department of Customer Services announced today that it will be extending by 90 days the expiration date on driver licenses and state identification cards issued on O‘ahu, and allowing drivers age 72 and older to renew their two-year licenses by mail under certain conditions.

These new procedures support the Centers for Disease Control's recommendations for safeguards related to public health concerns.

The new measure automatically grants a 90-day extension on the expiration date of driver licenses and state identification cards that expire in the months of March, April, May and June. Licenses that expired prior to March are not eligible. The extension takes effect on March 18. Licenses will no longer be valid for driving after the 90-day period unless they are renewed.

The extension applies to all valid O‘ahu driver licenses, learner permits and identification cards. Late fees will not be assessed during this period for those qualifying for the extension. The fee waiver does not apply to licenses that have already expired.

"This extension is intended to minimize the public's need to visit a city service center and made in support of advice for social distancing," said Sheri Kajiwara, director of the city's Department of Customer Services. "The mail-in provision for seniors is meant to protect our most vulnerable population - our kupuna."
