Hawaii State Public Library System Temporary Closure

Updates to Library Services

HONOLULU -- At the Hawaii State Public Library System, we are working diligently to navigate the ongoing changes in guidance and requirements from local, state, and federal authorities during the COVID-19 outbreak. Given the most recent information, we will need to make some changes to support the health of our communities:

· All public library locations and bookmobile services will be closed

March 18 -- April 7, 2020

· All book drops will be closed starting March 19, 2020. We are asking everyone to hold on to our library materials until we open again.

Library Materials

We don't want for you to worry about fines and due dates during this stressful time while we are closed. Due dates and holds have been automatically extended.

· All items (including DVDs and HotPicks) checked-out starting March 16th will have a due date of April 13, 2020.

· No fines will be charged for items due between March 18 - April 7, 2020. For holds that you placed that haven't been filled, we are extending the requests to make sure you still get what you want after we reopen.

· For holds that are already at your favorite library, we are extending them to April 13th so you can pick them up after we reopen.

· All email notifications are turned off right now. Notifications will resume once we reopen.

· No new holds will be taken until we reopen.

Library Cards

We've made a few changes to make sure you have access to all of our free online resources while we are closed.

· If you owe fines/fees over $10, you will still have access to our digital resources. We want to make sure you can find something great to read!

· If your library card expires between February 26 -- April 13, we will extend your library card for another 30 days. Once we are open, you can come in to renew your card and ensure you have access to our digital resources.

Online Resources We are always open at librarieshawaii.org with many amazing online resources available to access from home 24/7. Our online collection includes:

· eBooks and eaudiobooks

· Digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, New York Times

· Online classes

· Online language learning

· Many online resources for homework, recreation and research

Enjoy our free resources using your library card!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 17, 2020

Hawaii State Public Library System Announces Temporary Closure

HONOLULU -- In response to recent guidance around social distancing issued by the Centers for Disease Control and the State Department of Health, the Hawaii State Public Library System has made the difficult decision to close all public library locations for public access effective March 18 -- 31, 2020. Bookmobile services will also be suspended. During these uncertain times, the Hawaii State Public Library System thanks the public for their support and patience as we continue to evaluate and adjust our operations because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The health and safety of our communities is our top priority.

Library Materials:

Don't worry about fine and fees -- in order to provide equitable access to resources, due dates and holds will be automatically extended to accommodate the closure period. Patrons may continue to drop off library books and materials at any of our library branches.

Online Resources:

The Hawaii State Public Library System is always open at librarieshawaii.org with many amazing online resources that are available 24/7 for free with your library card. Our online collection includes: ebooks and audiobooks; digital magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times; homework resources, such as Mango languages; and other online learning tools.

We realize that the temporary closure of our libraries may present a hardship for our patrons, but we're working on innovative solutions to ensure library access in the future. Updates will be posted on our website as they become available.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding as we navigate through this unprecedented time. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Hawaii State Public Library System libraries soon.
