Hawaii State Public Library System Launches Scholastic Teachables Free Online Resources for Students, Parents and Educators

The Hawaii State Public Library System is launching Scholastic Teachables, a free online educational resource to support Hawaii's keiki from home. Anyone with a Hawaii State Public Library System card can access thousands of learning opportunities for students.

Scholastic Teachables is a free online database of tens of thousands of searchable and printable educational materials. Created by teachers and precisely leveled, Scholastic Teachables materials are of high-quality and are ready-to-use for all age ranges from Pre-K to grade 8.

Teachers and families can search over 25,000 skills and activity sheets, mini-books, educational crafts, and more, to meet student needs. Access to Scholastic Teachables is like having thousands of workbooks, crafts and activities at your fingertips.

"We know that education in the current environment is a challenge. As a statewide library system, we want to support all of our learners so that everyone has an opportunity to continue their educational journey. With a library card, students, families and educators will have free access to Scholastic Teachables, which promotes skill building while making learning fun at the same time. We hope this will provide the additional resources that our growing learners need right now," said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich.

During the pandemic, the Hawaii State Public Library System staff has continued to work hard to support our residents with new and improved virtual resources accessible from home. In addition to Scholastic Teachables, the Hawaii State Public Library System has been busy presenting these programs during the pandemic:

  • An extended 2020 Summer Reading program "Imagine Your Story" through August 31;
  • Access to Ancestry Library Edition from home;
  • Continued acquisition of books and materials, including increasing the number of ebook selections;
  • Launched our own virtual programs featuring library staff story times and craft projects;
  • Provided access to Kanopy, a new video streaming service which provides free access to high-quality films, children's programming and educational courses; and
  • Created a new online library card application process.

In addition, the Hawaii Public Library System offers access to numerous databases; standardized test taking programs; foreign language lessons through Mango Languages; and access to hundreds of newspapers and magazines from around the world, including The New York Times. For students with learning challenges, such as dyslexia or challenges reading standard print, our Library for the Blind and Print Disabled has large print materials and audio book readers.

Library cards are free for Hawaii residents. Don't have a Hawaii State Public Library System library card? No problem! The Library System created a new online library card application process to allow our community to stay-at-home and still use our resources. The new library card application is now available online and provides access to library resources for 45 days. Before the 45 days expires, individuals must visit their nearest library to receive their permanent library card.
