44 street trees to be planted in Downtown, Chinatown

O‘AHU – The City is making our urban core greener! In the continued effort to revitalize the Downtown/Chinatown area, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation’s Division of Urban Forestry will be planting 44 street trees over the next several days.

The planting of Tulipwood, White Tecoma, Geometry, and Silver Trumpet trees will stretch from the end of ‘A‘ala Place to Alakea Street, with the first plantings beginning today in the River and ‘A‘ala street areas.

Planting crews will require either on-street parking or a lane of traffic to conduct their work. As a result, motorists are advised to avoid the areas indicated in the map.

The work is scheduled to be completed by next week. The approximately $188,000 contract for this planting effort was awarded to Island Landscaping & Maintenance, Inc.

Prior to this work, other improvement and beautification efforts were conducted throughout the Downtown/Chinatown area this year including:
a volunteer cleanup in August, street rehabilitations, increased police presence and houseless outreach efforts.
