City urging residents to use its free service to tow junked vehicles

HONOLULU – The city’s Motor Vehicle Control Section has big hopes of renewing enthusiasm for its free offer to accept unwanted vehicles across O‘ahu.

The city’s free Junked Vehicle Program took in 889 unwanted cars from owners who surrendered them last year, down sharply from 1,599 the previous year.

The program is critical to ongoing efforts to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles in the City and County of Honolulu, where about 1 in every 5 unwanted vehicles was towed last year after ending up curbside on public roadways. By comparison, about 1 in every 3 unwanted vehicles in 2019 was towed after being illegally dumped.

“We urge residents to take advantage of the city’s free service to dispose of unwanted vehicles,” said Department of Customer Services Director Nola Miyasaki. “It is illegal to abandon a vehicle on our city streets and with the help of residents, we can reduce the blight of abandoned vehicles in our neighborhoods.”

Junking a vehicle requires turning in a junking form, the license plates, registration and title to a satellite city hall. The vehicle must be free of trash, accessible by a tow truck and have at least two inflated tires for it be towed.

Information on junking a vehicle is available online at
honolulu.gov/csd. Surrendering a vehicle to the city does not relieve the owner of any financial responsibility such as liens, criminal charges or citations.
