Blessing ceremony helps activate fourth and final Kūhiō Beach Pavilion with new concession

WAIKĪKĪ -- Mayor Rick Blangiardi joined Honolulu City Council Chair Tommy Waters, Waikīkī leaders and representatives from the City's Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) on Wednesday to bless the final Kūhiō Beach Park pavilion ahead of its public opening as The Queen's Arbor, operated by Highgate Concessions, LLC.

"I am pleased that our City agencies, including DPR, DES, the Honolulu Police Department, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department's C.O.R.E. program and our Office of Housing are working closely with organizations and businesses in Waikīkī, including the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Waikīkī Business Improvement District, Waikīkī Improvement Association, Hawai‘i Visitors and Convention Bureau, O‘ahu Visitors Bureau and our city concessionaires to improve safety and the overall experience in Waikīkī for residents and visitors," said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. "I wish our concessionaires much success and extend my sincere appreciation to this team effort for working cohesively to build a stronger community."

The Queen's Arbor, located on Kalākaua Ave. between Lili‘uokalani Ave. and Ke‘alohilani Ave., will feature an ocean-front, sunrise breakfast of sustainable, farm-to table ingredients and a cultural storytelling experience, highlighting the rich history of Waikīkī and the legacy of Hawaii's last reigning monarch, Queen Lili‘uokalani, as well as her love for her summer retreat, called Hamohamo, with cottages that sat just opposite of Kūhiō Beach.

"We are honored to partner with the City to celebrate the rich history of Waikīkī and continue the spirit of Hawaiian hospitality," said Kelly Sanders, executive vice president of operations for Highgate Hawaii. "We are excited to share Queen Liliʻuokalani's legacy and cultural traditions with the community and guests and help restore a sense of place."

The two pavilions on Kūhiō Beach closest to Diamond Head are currently occupied by Pacific Island Beach Boys, providing beach services that include surfing lessons and board rentals, while the first pavilion on the ‘Ewa end is home to The Grass Shack Bistro, which features cold refreshments like shave ice and a signature pineapple drink.

"We are very fortunate to have a variety of partners and activities to fill and help maintain the pavilions along Kūhiō Beach with recreational and dining opportunities for locals and visitors," said Laura H. Thielen, the director of the City's Department of Parks and Recreation. "Activation of the areas will be a tremendous benefit to the public, and we hope these new, temporary concessions will help us to determine longer-term solutions for the area."

A soft opening of The Queen's Arbor is scheduled for Monday, June 20, 2022. For reservations, activities and menu information please go to their website at: https://www.alohilaniresort.com/queensarbor.
