City park toilet paper supply returns to normal

O‘AHU -- The call for public assistance with a City park toilet paper shortage is now suspended after a steadier supply of industrial-sized toilet paper has been secured and a reserve inventory of the paper established.

About seven weeks ago, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) issued a public announcement of the City park bathroom toilet paper shortage after increased production costs and reduced raw materials resulted in an inconsistent supply of the specific toilet paper used in these public bathrooms around O‘ahu.

For some delivery periods, this resulted in only 40% of the regular supply delivered at a time when DPR experiences increased park bathroom usage, typically during the summer months. DPR maintains approximately 215 comfort stations across O‘ahu, which utilize industrial toilet paper rolls different from the regular, household rolls sold at local stores and super markets.

"A big mahalo to our parks ‘ohana across the island for being so understanding of our toilet paper shortage," said DPR Director Laura H. Thielen. "We wanted to be as transparent as possible with this unfortunate situation, to avoid park users from being caught off guard or park bathrooms experiencing an unmanageable amount of clogging. We appreciate everyone's kokua and patience as we worked to get the supply of this bathroom necessity back to regular levels."

The primary provider of toilet paper to DPR, Veritiv, was able to supply large infusions of toilet paper during these past weeks, but now a more steady and secure supply of the toilet paper has been confirmed.

"Veritiv is grateful for the opportunity to support DPR operations at their facilities across O'ahu for the enjoyment of kama'āina and visitors alike," said J.R. Reisinger, Veritiv's Hawai‘i Sales Manager. "We appreciate our partners at DPR choosing Veritiv to be their supplier of choice now and in the future."

Although toilet paper stocking has returned to normal, we continue to urge the public to please not use "flushable" wipes, paper towels, or clothing as an alternative to toilet paper. These items do not breakdown in water like regular toilet paper and cause clogs, resulting in bathroom closures until the clog can be removed.

Remember, only two things should be flushed down the toilet: bodily waste and toilet paper. If no toilet paper is available, please throw away whatever sanitary wipes are used in the trash bins instead of flushing them down the toilet.

If you need an auxiliary aid/service, other accommodations due to a disability, or an interpreter for a language other than English in reference to this announcement, please contact the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation at (808) 768-3003 on weekdays from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or email parks@honolulu.gov
