Three parks in Leeward, ‘Ewa area scheduled for closure

Kamokila closing for repaving, Mauna Lahilahi for rehabilitation, Pu‘uloa for illegal fireworks

O‘AHU -- Park closures are scheduled to begin soon for various reasons at three City parks located in the Leeward, ‘Ewa area of O‘ahu: Kamokila Community Park in Honokai Hale, Mauna Lahilahi Beach Park in Wai‘anae, and Pu‘uloa Beach Park in ‘Ewa.

At Kamokila Community Park, the closure is scheduled from Monday, June 26 through Friday, June 30 for repaving of the facility's parking lot. The work is expected to be finished, and the park reopened, on Saturday, July 1 weather and work schedule permitting. Since September 2021, the City has contracted over $3.5 million in repaving efforts at 21 park and garden locations across O‘ahu, including at this 5.89-acre Honokai Hale park site.

At Mauna Lahilahi Beach Park, the three-month closure is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 1. During this time a variety of rehabilitation efforts from various government agencies are scheduled for the 8.74-acre stretch of Leeward Coast, including:

  • Tree trimming and removal of brushy treelings to improve visibility
  • Reinforcing concrete barriers surrounding the park
  • Relocating boulders to restrict unauthorized vehicular access
  • Irrigation repairs
  • Installing new park location signage
  • Clearing of the adjacent stream
  • Sand pushing along the border with Farrington Highway to reduce accumulation along the wall and reduce sand overflow onto the highway
  • Working with nearby residents to activate the park following its public reopening

At Pu‘uloa Beach park, the closure is scheduled from Monday, July 3 at 8 p.m. until Wednesday, July 5 at 5 a.m. The closure of the 4.88-acre beach park is intended to reduce the launch of illegal fireworks from the area during the Independence Day Holiday. Vehicular barriers will be installed to restrict parking at the beach park during this temporary closure. The removal of the barriers will likely occur a few hours after the park reopens that Wednesday morning. In anticipation of the closure, no events have been permitted at the park from July 3 -- 5. A similar closure of this park was conducted during the last New Year's Eve Holiday.

The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is also taking this opportunity to provide an update on the renovations and continued closure of the comfort station (bathroom building) at Pōka‘ī Bay Beach Park. The security fencing installation project is pau, and our specialized maintenance staff will begin their work to improve the interior of the bathrooms. This includes replacing the stall partitions & plumbing fixtures, masonry work on the CMU walls, and painting. The current estimate for finishing this in-house work, and reopening the bathrooms, is the end of this July. If the work is completed before then, the facility will be reopened early. Portable toilets will remain available outside of the comfort station until that time.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of park users while these parks and facilities are closed for public use.
