O‘AHU – Following a blessing at Ke‘ehi Lagoon Beach Park today, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation’s (DPR) opened its first dedicated pickleball complex for public play!

12 new pickleball courts, complete with lines and nets, were repurposed from four underutilized tennis courts as part of a larger DPR effort to accommodate the increasing amount of players who enjoy the fastest growing sport in the country.

“It is very rewarding to see our outdoor courts given new life, and for pickleball players around the island to enjoy more dedicated facilities,” said DPR Director Laura H. Thielen. “Our existing inventory of mostly mixed-use pickleball courts are very popular, so we anticipate these new, dedicated courts to be well used. Mahalo to our DPR staff and the repurposing contractor, All Courts, for completing this conversion so quickly while continuing additional court resurfacing projects. We look forward to progressing this effort, and making better use of our existing facilities to accommodate a growing diversity of park users across O‘ahu.”

These court conversions, along with proposed revisions to the rules governing all City park courts, intend to strike a balance amongst the various groups and organizations which utilize these public facilities. We encourage everyone to take part in the online survey to gather input on our draft court rules through next Friday, July 21. You can access the survey by following this link (

  • Kailua District Park
  • Ka‘ala Neighborhood Park
  • Makakilo Community Park

Mixed in with these court conversions is DPR’s on-going effort to resurface other outdoor courts, with renovations scheduled next at:

  • Kapāolono Community Park
  • Herbert K. Pililā‘au Community Park
  • Kāne‘ohe District Park
  • Kalihi Valley District Park
