Kaiaka Campground adding ADA-complaint campsites, Kea‘au Campground temporarily closing

Two Kaiaka campsites repurposed for ADA-compliance. Kea‘au closure due to HDOT bridge construction

O‘AHU -- The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is pleased to announce two campsites at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park in Hale‘iwa have been repurposed to be ADA-compliant, with six additional ADA-parking stalls added to the beach park.

In-house work from DPR maintenance crews constructed new walkways connecting the campsites, comfort station, and the ADA-parking stalls, while making additional renovations to the campsites and parking in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The two ADA-compliant campsites, #1 and #2, will be available for permitted camping beginning Friday, Sept. 15 via DPR's camping reservation website at camping.honolulu.gov or by visiting the DPR Permits Office on the first floor of the Fasi Municipal Building. Reservations open today, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. HST for that camping period. The ADA-parking stalls are already available for public use. DPR now maintains ADA-accessible campsites at eight campgrounds:

· Hūnānaniho

· Kaiaka Bay Beach Park

· Kalaniana‘ole Beach Park

· Kea‘au Beach Park

· Kualoa Regional Park A

· Kualoa Regional Park B

· Swanzy Beach Park

· Waimānalo Beach Park

DPR is also tasking additional improvements to the Kaiaka Campground, including: four additional non-ADA campsites. grassing & irrigation renovations, and tree plantings. More information will be made available about these efforts as the plans are confirmed and the facilities are made available.

The nearly 53-acre Kaiaka Bay Beach Park features five-day permitted camping from Friday afternoon until Wednesday morning. Following community concerns expressed at the Mayoral Townhall meeting in Waialua earlier this year, several of the park's Hale‘iwa-side ironwood trees were trimmed or removed for safety reasons. The park experienced tree plantings in 2019, with additional plantings planned as mentioned above.

On the Leeward Coast, a Hawai‘i Dept. of Transportation bridge installation project will require the closure of the campground at Kea‘au Beach Park from Friday, Sept. 29 through Thursday, Oct. 5. This bridge project will require the full 72-hour closure of Farrington Highway, in both directions, between Kili Dr. and Makau St. For up-to-date closure information, call the project hotline at 808-441-9724. Camping at Kea‘au Beach Park is scheduled to resume the weekend of Oct. 6 barring any delays with the bridge project. Mahalo for your patience and understanding while this popular Leeward campground is temporarily closed.

The over 38-acre Kea‘au Beach Park experienced a parking lot repaving in Nov. 2021, with additional parking bollards and new gates installed this past July.
