Call for Artists: “Our Sea of Islands” Exhibit at Capitol Modern
Deadline extended to December 31, 2023! The Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Gravitas Pasifika are accepting submissions of artwork for an upcoming art exhibit, "Our Sea of Islands", at Capitol Modern (Hawaiʻi State Art Museum). This is an international call and is open to submissions of any medium, inclusive of contemporary and of heritage art objects. Submissions should center issues related to Pacific identity, oceanic connectivity, and cultural resilience.

About the theme
Coined by scholar and cultural practitioner Epeli Hauʻofa, “Our Sea of Islands” is a frequently quoted reference to a redirection in the perspectives of the islands in the Pacific. Rather than considering these islands as an exotic other, Hauʻofa challenged the world to see the Pacific region as a metropolis for engagement of all kinds. Hauʻofa’s essay can be read online through the University of Hawaiʻi ScholarSpace: ScholarSpace.manoa.hawaii.edu/items/c44a528a-d221-4831-8416-d3de367520bd.

This international call is open to artists Indigenous to the following Pacific Island nations or territories: American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Hawaiʻi, Kiribati, Republic of the MarshalI Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand (Aotearoa), Niue, Norfolk Islands, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Island, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna, and Republic of China (Taiwan).
