2024 HAWAIʻI REGIONAL SCHOLASTIC STUDENT ART AWARDS EXHIBIT

Forest Flutters with HTY

Multi-sensory immersive performance designed for young people with developmental differences and disabilities

In this photo, the student and performer are holding a soft ʻākohekohe (Hawaiian crested honeycreeper) toy. The performance was developed with input from the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) to feature and highlight specific native birds and fact-based information about the birds behaviors and habitats.

School presentations and public performances are happening for the “Forest Flutters” multi-sensory immersive performances with Honolulu Theatre for Youth at Capitol Modern. Designed for young people with developmental differences and disabilities, performances are limited to 10 children and their care givers. Artists in the Schools

Artists in the Schools applications close March 28
School year 2024-2025/6 applications are now open on the SFCA online grant portal, Hawaii.GoSmart.org. Artists in the Schools provides high quality arts education to State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education public and charter schools, grades pre-K through 12. SFCA Grantee Spotlight: Maui Arts and Cultural Center brings art therapy to Lahaina fire survivors

At the Royal Lahaina Resort, where the only residents these days are fire victims, educator Kilihune Ka'aihue leads a hula class that the health department is offering in partnership with the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC). Kids are scattered on a mat, overlooking the Pacific Ocean while they play puʻili, Hawaiian instruments that look like drumsticks.”

SFCA Board approves purchases of 31 works from Kauaʻi, Maui, and Oʻahu
The SFCA Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of 31 works of art from exhibits on Oʻahu, Maui, and Kauaʻi at the January 17, 2024 board meeting.
The board also approved accepting a gift of an artwork, “Holua” Hawaiian Sled by Ray Nitta and Norman Tochiki.

Art Acquisition Selection Committee (AASC) visits provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. The SFCA Board of Commissioners has approved Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits to these exhibits:

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
