Tree PalmPark Closure Hours Established For Two Hawaii Kai Parks

Park closure hours established for two Hawai‘i Kai parks

O‘AHU -- Following input from the Hawai‘i Kai community and law enforcement officials, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is establishing closure hours at Maunalua Bay Beach Park and Joe Lukela Beach Park effective today.

Both parks, which surround the State-operated Maunalua Bay Boat Ramp, are now closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The request for regular closure hours for these two City beach parks was formally approved by the area's Neighborhood Board during their February 2024 meeting. Upon the board's request, the hours can be reconsidered for modification after a two-year period ending March 2026.

It is important to remember that even with new or modified park closure hours, the public may traverse a closed public park, especially to access other public resources like the ocean. A closure indicates that you may not remain in the park, unless otherwise permitted.

DPR staff completed installation of the physical signage listing these new closure hours in Hawai‘i Kai on Friday, March 22. The new closure hours are also reflected online at: bit.ly/ParkClosureHours Other park closure hours vary from park-to-park, with the most common City park closure hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.

If you need an auxiliary aid/service, other accommodations due to a disability, or an interpreter for a language other than English in reference to this announcement, please contact the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation at (808) 768-3003 on weekdays from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or email parks@honolulu.gov at least three business days before the scheduled event. Without sufficient advanced notice, it may not be possible to fulfill requests.
